Ohio Modernizes Government Services with AI and Cloud Integration
- •Ohio establishes AI Council to oversee 92 approved generative AI use cases across state agencies.
- •Over 10,000 state employees completed AI training through the InnovateUS curriculum and sandbox environments.
- •State leadership prioritizes secure digital identity and cloud migration to modernize resident-facing government services.
Ohio State CIO Katrina Flory is leading a comprehensive digital transformation focused on integrating artificial intelligence into government workflows while ensuring robust oversight. At the center of this effort is the newly established AI Council, which serves as a governing body to review and approve agency use cases before they enter production. Currently, 92 use cases have been sanctioned, primarily focusing on internal tools designed to enhance workforce productivity and operational efficiency across various departments.
To support this technological shift, the state has prioritized human capital through the InnovateUS curriculum, training over 10,000 employees on responsible AI usage. This educational framework includes a secure sandbox environment, allowing workers to experiment with emerging tools without risking sensitive state data. This "teaching them to fish" philosophy extends to cloud migration, where agencies are empowered to modernize their own application portfolios using established state playbooks and vendor partnerships.
Beyond internal efficiency, Ohio is evolving its digital interface for residents through the InnovateOhio Platform and OHID, a secure identity system used by eight million citizens for services like tax filings and license renewals. By embedding AI into cybersecurity tools and standardizing data governance, Ohio aims to create a resilient, user-centric government ecosystem that balances innovation with public trust.
