Partnership on AI Expands Global Governance Network
- •Partnership on AI adds five organizations to advance responsible solutions in law and technical standards.
- •New partners include MLCommons, DLA Piper, and ELLIS Alicante to bridge governance with technical rigor.
- •Collaboration focuses on AI safety benchmarks, data stewardship, and equitable economic distribution frameworks.
The Partnership on AI (PAI) has significantly bolstered its multi-stakeholder coalition by welcoming five new member organizations, marking a strategic expansion of its influence nearly a decade after its 2016 inception. This cohort—comprising DLA Piper, ELLIS Alicante, MLCommons, Open Library Foundation, and Windfall Trust—brings a multidisciplinary blend of legal expertise, technical standardization, and socioeconomic foresight.
The inclusion of MLCommons is particularly noteworthy, as the engineering consortium specializes in benchmarking the reliability and accuracy of AI systems. By integrating their AILuminate risk suite with PAI’s governance frameworks, the alliance aims to bridge the gap between abstract safety principles and measurable technical performance. This shift toward empirical accountability is critical as models become more complex and integrated into public infrastructure.
Simultaneously, the addition of the Open Library Foundation and Windfall Trust addresses the soft pillars of AI development: data stewardship and economic equity. Librarians contribute expertise in curation—a vital skill for ensuring training data is well-documented rather than indiscriminately harvested. Meanwhile, Windfall Trust focuses on the urgent task of preparing labor markets for disruption, ensuring that the wealth generated by automation serves the public interest rather than concentrating among a few stakeholders.
This expansion reflects a growing recognition that safe AI is not merely a technical challenge but a collaborative effort requiring legal rigor and human-centered design. As PAI leadership noted, the goal is to co-create solutions that serve the public interest across sectors, from single-owner startups to multinational enterprises and governments.
