MUFG and Sakana AI to Automate Banking Core with AI
- •MUFG and Sakana AI develop an AI agent covering the entire loan process
- •Verification confirms AI's ability to handle complex credit approval tasks
- •Phased rollout begins across MUFG branches nationwide using real cases
Mitsubishi UFJ Bank (MUFG) and Sakana AI have announced their transition to the practical verification phase for 'AI Loan Expert,' a system designed to evolve the loan process—the very heart of banking. This initiative is a cornerstone of the comprehensive partnership established between the two companies in 2025. Following six months of rigorous testing, a successful Proof of Concept (PoC) demonstrated the system's viability in real-world lending scenarios. Consequently, the project will move forward with a phased implementation, starting at select locations before expanding to branches across the country.
The system focuses on 'Loan Approval (Ringi),' a critical and highly regulated process where banks analyze the validity of a loan from multiple perspectives to reach an internal consensus. To tackle this, Sakana AI deployed its proprietary autonomous AI agent technology, including 'The AI Scientist,' which automates research paper writing, and 'ALE-Agent,' designed for tasks requiring sophisticated judgment. This AI agent is not merely a tool for drafting documents; it is built to provide end-to-end support, from initial information gathering and data organization to complex financial simulations that project future fiscal health.
The development process involved a cross-functional team of approximately 100 experts, including relationship managers (RMs), credit examiners, and digital specialists. This close collaboration enabled the team to translate the 'implicit knowledge' of veteran bankers into AI algorithms, a significant achievement in capturing expertise that is traditionally difficult to verbalize. Results indicate that even in loan processes requiring nuanced judgment, the system significantly reduces processing time while enhancing accuracy. It is expected to serve as a powerful educational tool for junior employees and a sophisticated assistant for veterans, allowing them to focus on deeper strategic thinking.
