Mississippi Launches AI Chatbot to Streamline Government Procurement
- •Mississippi’s AI Innovation Hub pilots Procurii chatbot to streamline state procurement operations
- •Tool uses retrieval-based architecture to provide policy answers with verified official references
- •Developed with Mississippi State University, the project will eventually be released as open source
Mississippi is taking a practical step toward modernizing bureaucracy with the debut of Procurii, an AI-powered chatbot designed to navigate the dense forest of state procurement regulations. Developed by the state’s AI Innovation Hub in collaboration with students from Mississippi State University, the tool serves as a digital consultant for staff within the Department of Information Technology Services (ITS). Instead of manual document searches, users can query the system in plain language to receive guidance backed by specific citations from official records.
The architecture relies on a retrieval-based system—often referred to as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)—which ensures the chatbot pulls information directly from a trusted internal knowledge base rather than relying on its own internal training data. This approach significantly reduces the risk of Hallucination, where AI generates plausible-sounding but factually incorrect information. By keeping the AI grounded in official materials, the Hub ensures that the advice remains compliant with strict state governance standards.
Beyond its immediate utility, Procurii represents a strategic shift toward measured, responsible AI integration within government functions. The state plans to eventually release the tool as an open-source resource, allowing other agencies to adapt the framework for various compliance-driven tasks. This initiative not only addresses the risk of losing institutional knowledge as veteran staff retire but also provides a training ground for the next generation of public sector technology leaders.
