Microsoft is shifting from reactive AI assistants to proactive collaborators with the unveiling of Copilot Cowork. Available via the Frontier program, this update introduces orchestration capabilities that allow AI to manage persistent, multi-step workflows within the Microsoft 365 environment. Unlike previous iterations focused on chat-based generation, Cowork is designed to take real action—reasoning across files and tools to maintain progress on long-term projects like monthly budget cycles or complex meeting coordination without needing constant user prompts.
A key component of this release is the enhanced Researcher tool, which utilizes a Critique architecture to bolster accuracy and objectivity. This multi-model system separates the creative process from the verification stage: one model generates an initial draft, while a second specialized model acts as an expert reviewer to refine the output. This separation of duties mimics professional human workflows and has resulted in a 13.8% performance gain on the DRACO benchmark, the current industry standard for measuring deep research quality and completeness.
The update also includes a Model Council feature, enabling enterprise users to compare responses from different models side-by-side to identify unique strengths and divergences.
