Google Expands Gemini AI Features in Chrome Globally
- •Google rolls out Gemini 3.1-powered Chrome features to India, New Zealand, and Canada
- •New multi-tab reasoning allows Gemini to consolidate information and compare products across multiple websites
- •Integrated Nano Banana 2 model enables on-the-fly image transformations via text prompts in the browser
Google is significantly broadening its AI footprint by integrating Gemini 3.1 directly into the Chrome browser for users in India, New Zealand, and Canada. This update transitions the browser from a simple window to the web into a proactive assistant capable of understanding context across multiple open tabs. By clicking a dedicated icon, users can access a side panel to summarize dense documents, generate quizzes, or even draft emails through deep integrations with Gmail and Docs without losing their place in their current workflow.
One of the most impressive technical additions is the ability to perform cross-tab reasoning. Instead of manually copying and pasting data between sites, users can ask Gemini to create comparison tables for products or plan itineraries based on research spread across several windows. This functionality treats the entire browsing session as a unified data source, significantly reducing the cognitive load of complex online tasks like shopping or academic research.
The update also introduces Nano Banana 2, a specialized model designed for real-time image manipulation. This allows users to transform visual content—such as changing the fabric of a sofa in a furniture photo—using natural language prompts directly within the side panel. To ensure these powerful tools remain secure, Google has implemented automated red-teaming (a process of simulating attacks to find vulnerabilities) to defend against threats like prompt injection while maintaining user control over sensitive actions like calendar scheduling.
