Google is intensifying its commitment to environmental sustainability with the release of its 2026 Water Stewardship Project Portfolio, a strategy aimed at achieving "water positivity" by 2030. This involves replenishing more freshwater than the company consumes across its global network of data centers. In 2025, the company replenished over 7 billion gallons of water through 165 projects spanning 97 watersheds, from the American Midwest to the bogs of Ireland.
Central to this initiative is the deployment of technology to solve localized water crises. In Brazil’s Tietê Basin, Google is collaborating with Agrow Analytics to utilize AI-driven insights that optimize agricultural irrigation, ensuring crops receive water only when necessary. Similarly, in Bengaluru, India, the company partnered with FluxGen to install an AI-powered "Water Intelligence Suite" in schools. This system provides real-time data on usage patterns, identifying leaks and inefficiencies that would otherwise go unnoticed.
Beyond AI, Google is investing in nature-based solutions and IoT sensors. In the Colorado River Basin, sensors help the Gila River Indian Community conserve resources for Lake Mead. By blending data-centric monitoring with ecological restoration, Google aims to build a resilient infrastructure capable of meeting the rising demands of digital services while protecting critical ecosystems.
