Doctrine, the Paris-based legal AI powerhouse, has officially acquired the Spanish legal co-pilot Maite, marking a significant step in its quest to dominate the European legal technology landscape. This move represents Doctrine’s fifth acquisition in just three years, solidifying a massive user base of over 27,000 legal professionals across major EU markets including France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.
Maite, which only launched in 2024, has quickly proven its technical mettle by achieving a staggering 99% success rate on the Spanish judiciary access exam. The platform provides specialized Spanish-language AI assistance for drafting, reviewing, and Q&A workflows. By integrating these regional capabilities, Doctrine aims to combine its vast library of case law and statutes with sophisticated workflows powered by Large Language Models (LLMs).
CEO Guillaume Carrère emphasized that Doctrine’s strategy hinges on technological sovereignty, ensuring that their AI tools remain fully compliant with European GDPR regulations. The company’s approach pairs advanced search techniques—specifically Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), which allows the AI to reference specific legal documents to ensure accuracy—with generative skills to surface information from complex legal records.
The acquisition underscores a broader trend of consolidation within the legal tech sector, as local champions join forces to build cross-border platforms capable of competing on a global scale. Maite will retain its brand and team in Spain while benefiting from Doctrine’s decade of industry expertise and substantial data infrastructure.
