Coursera Report: 95% of Students and Faculty Use AI
- •Coursera report finds 95% of students and faculty use AI tools in educational contexts.
- •Only 25% of educators feel they have the skills to use AI to their advantage.
- •Personalized learning is cited as the most positive AI impact by 47% of survey respondents.
A new report from Coursera highlights a stark divide in higher education: while AI adoption is nearly universal, the infrastructure for training and governance is lagging far behind. Over 95% of students and educators across five major global markets are now active users of AI tools, yet a staggering three-quarters of faculty feel unprepared to use these technologies effectively.
The data suggests that the "fear of replacement" narrative is being eclipsed by a demand for Adaptive Learning—systems that tailor educational experiences to individual needs. Nearly half of the respondents view this personalization as AI’s primary benefit. Students are not using these tools to bypass learning; instead, they are integrating them into their workflows for research, drafting, and time management. In fact, a majority of students use AI for less than half of their total academic tasks.
Despite this grassroots adoption, institutional readiness remains a critical bottleneck. Only 26% of faculty report having a formal AI policy at their university, leaving a vacuum of guidance that could lead to inconsistent standards. The report concludes that integrating AI literacy into professional development is no longer optional but a requirement for maintaining academic integrity and student success in a post-AI world.
