Canva has officially activated four community solar farms in Illinois, marking a significant transition in how the design platform manages the environmental impact of its physical products. These facilities, each producing between 4 and 5 megawatts of renewable energy, are specifically designed to match the electricity consumption across Canva’s entire U.S. and Canadian Print supply chain.
The initiative leverages a sustainability-focused AI platform called Watershed to handle the complex task of carbon accounting. By analyzing vast datasets to measure footprints and model renewable energy needs, the platform allows Canva to move beyond simple carbon credits toward adding "additionality"—new renewable capacity that would not have existed without this direct investment—to the power grid.
Transparency is central to the strategy, as Canva is publicly sharing its Climate Commitment framework. This model requires suppliers to report annual electricity usage and match it with high-impact renewable energy. By providing a technical roadmap for partners who may lack the resources for independent climate action, the company aims to decarbonize the manufacturing sector while simultaneously lowering local household energy costs through a community solar model.
