Amazon Bedrock Launches in New Zealand with Cross-Region Inference
- •Amazon Bedrock expands to New Zealand, offering local generative AI inference for regional customers
- •Auckland region gains access to Anthropic Claude 4.5/4.6 and Amazon Nova 2 models
- •New cross-region inference profiles allow organizations to maintain data residency within Australia and New Zealand
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched its generative AI platform, Amazon Bedrock, in the New Zealand region, providing local developers with direct access to advanced foundational models (FMs). This expansion into the Auckland region (ap-southeast-6) enables organizations to build AI applications using high-performance models like Anthropic's Claude 4.6 and Amazon’s own Nova 2 Lite without having to manage their own underlying hardware. By utilizing a source region closer to home, local businesses can improve the efficiency of their AI operations while adhering to strict governance standards.
One of the most critical features introduced is "cross-region inference," a system that intelligently routes AI requests between different geographic locations to ensure high availability and speed. For New Zealand organizations, this includes a specific "AU geographic" routing profile that keeps data processing entirely within the Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) corridor. This ensures that sensitive information remains encrypted and flows only between data centers in Auckland, Sydney, and Melbourne, effectively addressing concerns regarding data sovereignty and residency.
Beyond residency, the launch offers "global" routing for workloads that prioritize raw speed and high volume over specific geographic constraints. By dynamically distributing traffic across the global AWS network, Bedrock can prevent slowdowns during peak usage hours (throttling) and maintain operational continuity if one region experiences high demand. This strategic rollout equips New Zealand’s tech sector with the infrastructure needed to deploy sophisticated AI agents and data analysis tools with the same scale and security found in larger global markets.
