- •Firefly Image Editor adds Generative Upscale and supports third-party generative models.
Adobe is fundamentally shifting the creative process by integrating conversational AI directly into its flagship software, Photoshop. The new AI Assistant, currently in public beta for web and mobile platforms, allows users to perform complex edits—such as removing distractions or adjusting lighting—through natural language commands. This transition from manual tool selection to intent-based editing represents a significant step in making professional-grade design accessible to a broader audience of students and marketers.
Beyond simple commands, the update introduces AI Markup, a feature that bridges the gap between sketching and text-based generation. By drawing directly on an image and providing a prompt, creators can specify the exact placement of new elements like landscapes or objects with high precision. This contextual awareness ensures that the AI-generated content blends seamlessly with the existing composition, reducing the friction often associated with traditional layering and masking techniques.
The Firefly Image Editor is also receiving a substantial overhaul, consolidating tools like Generative Fill and Generative Remove into a unified workspace. Perhaps most notably, Adobe is embracing an open ecosystem by allowing users to choose from over 25 different AI models, including proprietary offerings from Google and OpenAI. This flexibility, paired with the offer of unlimited generations for paid subscribers, positions Adobe as a central hub for the rapidly evolving landscape of generative media.
