1Password has unveiled "Unified Access," a new platform designed to solve the complex authentication and access management challenges emerging as AI agents and automated workflows become widespread. In modern corporate environments, AI agents are increasingly embedded within IDEs, browsers, and business applications, rendering traditional security models—which trust a session once a human has logged in—largely obsolete. Because AI tools and scripts now handle API keys, tokens, and SSH keys directly, these credentials often end up scattered across local developer environments or shared files, leading to a surge in "Shadow AI" risks that security teams cannot easily track.
To regain control over these "moments of credential usage," Unified Access employs a three-stage approach: Discover, Secure, and Audit. The platform begins by scanning endpoints and browsers to identify unencrypted secrets and highlight potential vulnerabilities. These credentials are then consolidated into a secure Vault, transitioning the organization to a "Just-in-Time" access model. In this framework, permissions are granted with minimum necessary privileges and only for the duration required by the AI agent, drastically reducing the risk of long-lived, static credentials remaining exposed on the network.
Furthermore, 1Password announced broad integrations with the AI and development ecosystem, including Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI, GitHub, Vercel, and Perplexity. For instance, the integration with Claude allows a browser extension to securely auto-fill information from a Vault, enabling the AI to log into services on the user's behalf with explicit consent.
